The Fuji-Xerox 17 (FJX17) engine was first introduced in 1996 in the IBM Network Printer 17 and Xerox DocuPrint 4517, network printers targeting medium to large workgroups. The FJX17 engine features 17 (ppm) print speed, a duplex option, and 600 dpi print resolution. The engine also supports edge-to-edge printing, which is a key selling point for the IBM printer. NEC soon followed with it's own versions of the printer in 1997, the NEC Silentwriter 1700 series.
The cartridge is relatively easy to remanufacture. Held together by two cartridge pins, the waste bin and hopper sections separate easily, providing ready access to all components for inspection and replacement. Most components, foams, and felts will be familiar to the experienced remanufacturer, with the exception of the doctor blade. Comprised of a stainless-steel shim with silicone applied to the working edge of the blade, the doctor blade closely compares to XP15/20, also a Fuji-Xerox engine.
The OEM cartridge pins can be removed by tapping them through the hopper and waste bin pin casings to the interior of the cartridge. The pins should fall out of the cartridge through the laser port. The waste bin section houses the OPC drum, PCR, wiper blade and recovery blade. The OPC drum contains two inserts to dampen drum vibrations that result in humming noises. Testing in Static Control’s Imaging Laboratories has indicated a considerable difference in noise generated when the cartridge is operated without the drum inserts. The amount of noise created is generally caused by the hardness of the PCR. Harder PCRs tend to generate more noise than softer PCRs. When using a replacement drum, we highly recommend using a drum with inserts in order to minimize any noise that may be potentially objectionable to your customers. The PCR also merits some cautions regarding print problems in low-humidity conditions.
